Wikiloc is one of the most popular GPS applications to discover and share routes in nature, with any activity including of course splitboarding and mountaineering skiing.
Download the application and from the activity filters select Splitboard, Snowboard and Backcountry Ski, Alpine Ski, Freeride Ski and follow the routes saved by the other users.
Maps can also be stored on the GPS device, GARMIN or SUUNTO.
The ideal of course would be to prepare yourselves with the saved routes from home and before you follow the route you decide.
It is necessary to combine more information such as getting the weather forecast, the last snowfall, making a phone call to someone who has been or stays nearby to learn more!
We do not forget that the saved route was made by another rider and under other circumstances. For these reasons, we must always calculate some extra time from the one mentioned. It is also good to see who is the user who saved the route. For example, if she is an athlete, then it may be more demanding than we think.
In Wikiloc you can record with GPS your own route as well, save it and share it with the other users.
When you do that then do not forget to add as much information and photos as you can!
FATMAP or You were born to explore ...!
It is a platform for outdoor adventure and activities with a high-resolution 3D map.
It gives you the ability to record your routes with GPS (but it is not so widespread among Greek users).
But it is an amazing tool for an off-line exploring of the mountain before the hike due to its high resolution and features.
You find almost all the peaks with their names, the slopes with their inclinations in degrees and their direction, isosceles curves, distances, the possible risk of avalanche on each slope based on the degrees.
It contains marked paths, altitudes of the peaks, dragon lakes, ravines, cliffs, rocky areas, etc.
You will love this application!
Avenza Maps is a (what else!) Maps application that has the ability to navigate and map to remote areas, even without an Internet connection.
In this application and in the middle of the Greek ROUTE MAPS we can find a FREE map of Olympus with the most famous ascents and descents with mountaineering skis.
A total of 6 descent routes have been mapped so far on the mountain of the gods.
ATTENTION because the specific routes have also been categorized according to the degree of difficulty!
Those in red are more demanding slopes, difficult and require more experience of climbers on the mountain, while those in blue are considered more accessible to all.
According to ROUTE MAPS, in any case, the climbers must evaluate their conditions and possibilities and take all the necessary safety measures during their excursions.
The Clinometer is nothing more than a simple application of measuring inclination in degrees.
There are several applications for measuring inclination.
You can download the one that is most convenient for you and use it just by tilting the mobile phone along the slope until the clinometer stabilizes and shows the degrees.
We use the inclinometer on the slopes that we move because it is necessary to know exactly the inclination and make the decision whether we will continue on that slope or not.
The activation of an avalanche depends directly on the slope, inclination and can potentially be done on slopes with an inclination of 30 - 60 degrees and especially on the slopes with 30 - 45 degrees.
There are many compass applications, but this one shows the compass on a Google map and makes our life in the mountains even easier!
You can move around the map and the compass updates automatically.
From the application, you have the ability to update and send your spot via google maps in messenger, Viber, what's app, email etc with the push of a button.
An application with first aid in case of an accident.
This application is an initiative of the Greek Red Cross and contains instructions for first aid in various situations such as unconscious victim, drowning, asthma attack, bleeding fractures, hypothermia, shock and other emergencies that may occur in an isolated place such as the mountain.
The application is very good, but emergencies need a lot of experience in dealing with them and especially in the mountain where temperatures are low.
Many applications for weather forecasting online...
It is good to check some of them repeatedly before we decide which one is the most user-friendly and the key is to know which forecasting models it uses and of course, check if it responds well on the places we go oftently.
We always check the weather in the surrounding areas ( eg nearby villages, nearby cities).
Perhaps it is necessary to study the weather that follows our trip (such as clouds, rain, snow) to know, what to expect in case you need to stay more time in the mountains.
Mountain-forecast.com has not a mobile app yet, like snow-forecast.com which refers to Ski resorts.
But you can have a good report as well if you just save the webpage on your mobile.
It is quite reliable in the forecasts of snowfall and weather for the Greek mountains.
When you have taken the adventure seriously ....!
There are many Survival applications available and the truth is that there are situations that if you do not experience them you may not know how to respond immediately.
This one will tell you how to start a fire or how to deal with situations of psychological stress or how to find food in nature on your own, etc.
Maybe some scenarios are a bit tricky and it may be good to avoid them .... Just in case, a fire light needed ...out there!
